Random Encounters

July 30, 2007

Quote of the Day:

“I’m not an idiot, I’m just obliging.” -Tom

I’ve been sitting at a cute little cafe on Queen St in Toronto, the Tequila Bookworm, and guess who decides to sit at the table next to me? None other than Jack and Meg White. As soon as they left, the server played a White Stripes album over the loudspeakers. I’m not the biggest White Stripes fan, so I didn’t even realize it was them until they started talking about the Oscars (also a cultural phenomenon I don’t really care for).

Otherwise, I’m off to Grossman’s for a beer and some good music.

Women’s Work

July 25, 2007

Man, the climate in Canada for women has just gotten colder. Status of Women Canada’s new mandate, as handed down by the Harper government, has stricken ‘equality’ from its objectives. Bev Oda, the minister of Status of Women bravely announced that women need not fret, because women are now ‘equal’ in Canada, thus ‘equality’ is no longer something to work toward. Thanks Bev! But somehow, the stats don’t add up…

there are 67% more women making less than $30 000/year than men.

there are 77% more men making more than $100 000/year than women.

Does that sound equal to you?

check it out <http://pacificcoast.net/~swag/womenfactsChart.htm>

Bev Oda said that women “understand the value of a dollar”, and thus 12 out of the 16 Status of Women Canada offices across Canada will be closed. Well, the reason we understand the value of a dollar is because we earn on average only 70% of what men make. It’s 2007! Why is there still an income disparity? I didn’t sign up for this.

As a little girl I was constantly told I could do anything a man could. They left out the disclaimer: I could do anything men did as long as I wasn’t paid the same for it.

Thanks Bev!

That’s it! I’m moving to New Zealand to live with a rogue band of wild sheep.

Next year, I’ll be posting photos not quite like this (because I’ll be sporting a better ‘do, and the sheep will be wilder,) but almost:

I’ve just recently been bombarded by the blog. In a matter of minutes, it seems to have taken up a lot of space in my reality. I resisted getting a blog for a long time, and now I’m giving in. This is me giving in:

… so, I’m hoping this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship between me and my computer. I’m also looking forward to this slightly more productive and creative form of procrastination called a blog.

I’m apologizing in advance to the people who don’t even know that this blog exists yet, but are going to find themselves checking it compulsively because it is something to do on the internet; I’m sorry for the nonsensical crap that I will be posting. Keep reading though, hold out for the idea that there might be a few gems in here, and so will I. I’ll be doing lots of writing this summer, so I expect I’ll also be doing a lot of procrastination, hence lots of strange little nuggets will be appearing on here shortly.

so, yes…. hello world indeed.
